Friday Night Quads
Chess Odyssey's Friday Night Quads have become a major element of the competitive chess landscape in
metropolitan Portland. While most of the players are kids, adults are welcome and some do play. Players are ranked
by their OSCF rating and grouped into four player sections. (If a player does not have an OSCF rating, their first
quad will generate one for them.) We have a trophy for first place and a medal for second player in each
quad. The entry fee is $15.
We run the quads every other Friday evening at Bethany Presbyterian (15505 NW Springville Road,
Portland, OR 97229). Check-in is 6:15-6:45 on Friday evening. Play starts as close to 7:00 pm as
possible. Most quads are finished in about 90 minutes; more novice quads generally
finish sooner than that, while more advanced quads often run longer.
Last year participation dropped off sharply after the OSCF State Tournament in Seaside, so we stopped running
the quads through the summer. The same scenario may occur this year. However, as long as enough kids keep coming,
we'll keep running the tournaments. In any case, Friday Night Quads will start again in late September or early
October. You can check the OSCF calendar orcontact our
officefor the current status.
