How do I Teach?
An education in chess is an education in independent thought. As a result, my teaching style is primarily Socratic, using questions and answers to help students absorb the fundamental truths and build the practical skills that are the basis of practical playing strength. The Path to Victory
My signature training program is built around five key principles that decades of experience as a player and as a coach have taught me are the bedrock of practical playing strength.
Game Analysis
Any effective program of chess training centers around game analysis. My students and I explore two sets of games:
-
master games which provide powerful examples of chess principles in practical play.
-
their own games which show us how well those lessons are being applied, and clarify the next steps in their training process.
Tools of the Trade

Chess Culture
Over the centuries, great players have added to our understanding and enjoyment of chess. Their games, analysis, and exploits are a rich and colorful heritage that is a primary resource for a modern master's creativity and growth. We really do "stand on the shoulders of giants." It is important to learn the lessons - positive and negative - they teach have to teach us.
